Gallery Residence - AIA Honor Award

This house for an art collector is located on a sloping site adjacent to a wooded canyon with powerful views of the Pacific Ocean in the Highlands south of Carmel California. Designed as much for the exhibition of art as for a dwelling, the house is organized around a gallery hall spine.

With almost all circulation from one space to another taking place through this gallery hall, the art becomes a constant part of the daily experience of the occupants. Movement is celebrated, ritualized, and made an event -- the path is the destination.
