Thodos Torres Street - Remodel
Thodos intent was to create a contemporary cottage from the bones of an unremarkable Carmel by the Sea house. His design should retain the existing footprint, forms and scale while bringing clarity to the existing chaotic floor plan.
He began by removing walls and little rooms that had been added to the original house, i.e. very small bathrooms, a laundry room, porches, and one very badly built bedroom addition. A new master bedroom suite was created and a second bathroom was built adjacent to the second bedroom. The living room which had been converted into a bedroom became a living room again and a new kitchen, dining room and entrance were designed.
As a result of all new custom designed windows and glass walls light now fills the rooms illuminating the once small dark spaces that required artificial light even on sunny days.
Thodos chose Italian porcelain tile as the exterior material to define the new spaces and the base of the house. Cedar siding was chosen as a remembrance of the original wood cottage in the forest (see article in Home Style by the Sea). |
